26/12/2024 – Day 3: A Journey Through Ancient Vietnam and Cultural Wonders
A Comfortable Start to the Day
Our third day in Vietnam began with a sumptuous breakfast, setting the tone for a day filled with history, natural beauty, and cultural immersion. Boarding a luxurious and comfortable coach, we left the bustling streets of Hanoi behind to explore the treasures of Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and Mua Cave.
Hoa Lu: Vietnam’s Ancient Capital
Our first stop was Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010 AD. This historic site served as the political and cultural center during the Dinh, Le, and Ly dynasties. Upon arriving, we switched from the coach to bicycles for a scenic ride through lush green fields and peaceful villages to the heart of this ancient city.
The Architecture and Legacy of Hoa Lu
Hoa Lu’s architectural remnants reflect a harmonious blend of ancient Vietnamese design and influences from the neighboring Chinese Tang Dynasty. Two key temples stand as testaments to its history: the Temple of King Dinh Tien Hoang and the Temple of King Le Dai Hanh. Intricate carvings, traditional tiled roofs, and dragon motifs symbolize power and prosperity, while altars adorned with incense pay homage to these rulers who unified and protected Vietnam.
Walking through Hoa Lu’s tranquil grounds, we marveled at the remnants of ancient walls and gates, imagining the grandeur of this feudal stronghold. The historical significance of this site offered a profound insight into the roots of modern Vietnam.
A Cross-Cultural Luncheon
We enjoyed a delightful buffet lunch at a nearby restaurant, where we met a traveler from Poland. Sharing stories about our travels and mutual friends, the conversation added a personal touch to the day. The meal was a medley of Vietnamese flavors, leaving us both satisfied and eager for the next adventure.
Tam Coc: Ha Long Bay on Land
Post-lunch, we headed to Tam Coc, often called “Ha Long Bay on Land” due to its striking limestone karst formations rising from emerald rice fields. Boarding a bamboo boat, we embarked on a serene 1.5-hour journey through this enchanting landscape.
A Unique Rowing Technique
The highlight of the boat ride was witnessing the locals’ unique rowing technique, using their feet to skillfully maneuver the boats. It was both fascinating and entertaining, especially as some rowers managed to take photographs while rowing at impressive speeds. The cloudy skies dimmed the scenery’s photographic appeal but amplified the meditative quality of the ride.
As we glided along the Ngo Dong River, massive karst mountains loomed above us, and small caves added an element of mystery. The experience was deeply relaxing, offering a tranquil contrast to the bustling energy of Hanoi.
Mua Cave: Aerial Views and Hidden Beauty
Our final stop of the day was Mua Cave, renowned for its panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. While my children climbed the 500 steps to the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain, I opted to fly my drone, capturing stunning aerial views of the fields and walkways shaped like a lotus.
Though the cloudy skies muted the vibrancy of the photographs, the experience of seeing this landscape from above was unparalleled. Certain moments, after all, are meant to be cherished beyond the lens of a camera.
Back to Hanoi: A Night of Culture and Shopping
Returning to Hanoi, we barely had time to freshen up before heading to the much-anticipated Vietnamese Water Puppet Show at 9:00 PM. This traditional art form, dating back to the 11th century, combines puppetry and music performed on water.
The Water Puppet Show
The show was mesmerizing. Puppets depicting farmers, fishermen, and mythical creatures glided gracefully across the water, narrating tales of rural life, folklore, and historical events. Accompanied by a live orchestra, the performance featured traditional Vietnamese instruments like the dan bau (monochord) and dan nhi (two-stringed fiddle), along with soulful singing.
The combination of skilled puppetry, vibrant costumes, and evocative music created an enchanting spectacle that has earned international acclaim and numerous awards.
A Culinary Encore and Evening Stroll
Before the show, we revisited the place where we had enjoyed our first banh mi in Hanoi. Afterward, we indulged in another round of delectable Vietnamese dishes, savoring the vibrant flavors that define the local cuisine.
The night ended with a leisurely walk through the Old Quarter, where we indulged in some last-minute shopping. My son picked up a bright yellow North Face rucksack, while we browsed for souvenirs and knick-knacks amidst the bustling streets. The Old Quarter’s charm, alive with energy and the hum of vendors, made it a fitting farewell to Hanoi.
Reflections on Day Three
As we retired to the hotel for our final night in Hanoi, we reflected on the day’s rich tapestry of experiences—from the historical depths of Hoa Lu to the serene beauty of Tam Coc and the cultural wonder of the water puppet show. Though the skies remained overcast, the memories we made shone brightly, setting the stage for the adventures awaiting us in Ha Long Bay.
