27/12/24 – Day 4: Cruising Through the Wonders of Ha Long Bay
Setting Sail on Ha Long Bay
Our fourth day began with an early pick-up from our hotel, May Deville, and a smooth journey to the mesmerizing Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning karst limestone formations. Upon arrival, our luggage was promptly checked in, and we boarded the Grand Pioneers One, the luxury cruise we had booked for this leg of our trip.
Onboard Comfort and Stunning Scenery
The ship offered two adjoining executive suites with private balconies, providing an exquisite setting to soak in the bay’s beauty. As the cruise set sail, we were treated to a sumptuous lunch, passing by the iconic karst mountains rising dramatically from the emerald waters. Although the weather was overcast with a light drizzle, the haunting beauty of Ha Long Bay was undiminished.
Sung Sot Cave: A Journey Into the Earth
In the afternoon, while my wife chose to relax onboard, I joined my children on an excursion to the Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave), one of Ha Long Bay’s most renowned attractions. Discovered by French explorers in 1901, the cave’s grandeur lived up to its name.
Inside Sung Sot Cave
The cave, a masterpiece of natural artistry, featured an array of stalactites and stalagmites, forming intricate shapes that seemed to defy imagination. Our guide pointed out formations resembling animals and mythical creatures, from a dragon’s head to a turtle. Pillars, formed by the fusion of stalactites and stalagmites over centuries, stood as silent witnesses to the cave’s ancient history.
The cave’s primary and secondary formations showcased nature’s creativity, with light installations subtly enhancing the experience. The play of shadows and colors brought the rock formations to life, making it a magical and otherworldly experience. The enormity and beauty of Sung Sot left us awestruck, even as we lamented the absence of the much-coveted Ha Long Bay sunset, obscured by the overcast skies.
Evening Elegance: Dinner and Entertainment
Returning to the ship, we were greeted with a lavish dinner. The highlight was a massive lobster dish that was as delectable as it was memorable. While we regretted not capturing the feast on camera, the flavors lingered vividly in our memories.
Poolside Chats and Poker Lessons
The evening included some casual camaraderie with an American family we had met during the cave excursion. We enjoyed the heated pool during happy hour, exchanging stories and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. Later, I decided to learn poker for the first time. To my amusement, I ended up winning most of the games, often without understanding why! It was a lighthearted and enjoyable experience, played purely for fun with no money involved.
Missed Opportunities in Entertainment
While the cruise was luxurious, the onboard entertainment left something to be desired. A piano graced the lounge, but there were no singers or performers to liven up the atmosphere. It reminded me of previous cruises where waitstaff doubled as entertainers, adding a lively charm that was missing here. Nonetheless, the serene ambiance of Ha Long Bay offered its own form of quiet enchantment.
Reflections on the Day
Day four was a blend of natural wonder, quiet indulgence, and new experiences. Despite the cloudy weather, the allure of Ha Long Bay and the magnificence of Sung Sot Cave made the day unforgettable.
