28/12/2024 – Day 5: From Ha Long Bay to Da Nang – Adventures Above and Below
A Drone Adventure at Ha Long Bay
The day began early as I eagerly set out to fly my drone over the breathtaking Ha Long Bay. The previous evening, the ship’s captain had recounted a cautionary tale of a lost drone amidst the bay’s towering limestone karsts. Taking heed, I ventured out cautiously, even as the weather remained overcast. Despite the absence of a sunrise, I managed to capture some decent shots, including dramatic flybys of the karst formations.
However, as the ship had shifted its position from the time I took of in the morning, and me lazily using my drone’s return-to-home function nearly ended in disaster, as the drone attempted to land in the water. Thankfully, I recovered it just in time, a close call that added an extra thrill to the morning.
Breakfast and Exploring Luon Cave
After the adrenaline-filled drone adventure, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast onboard. Our next excursion was to Luon Cave, a hidden gem in Ha Long Bay. Visitors could explore the cave via canoe or a traditional wooden boat. Given our tight travel schedule, we opted for the latter, enjoying a tranquil ride through the emerald waters. Though the overcast weather dulled the colors, the serene experience and majestic limestone cliffs made up for it.
Grand Pioneers One: A Cruise to Remember
The Grand Pioneers One cruise had been a luxurious retreat amidst Ha Long Bay’s natural wonders. With its spacious suites and private balconies, it offered a perfect blend of comfort and adventure. While onboard entertainment left room for improvement, the ship’s attentive service and exquisite dining—featuring fresh seafood—made it a memorable experience.
Ha Long Bay hosts a variety of cruises, ranging from budget-friendly to ultra-luxury options like Paradise Elegance and Orchid Cruises, each catering to different tastes and preferences. The bay’s UNESCO World Heritage status makes it a must-visit, and a cruise is undoubtedly the best way to immerse yourself in its magic.
Farewell to Ha Long Bay
Following our excursion, we disembarked from Grand Pioneers One and headed to the coastline. From there, a well-organized bus transfer arranged by our travel agent brought us back to Hanoi. Before leaving the city, we squeezed in a visit to Banh Mi 25, a renowned spot for Vietnam’s iconic sandwich. Despite the long lines, the wait was worth it as each of us enjoyed two delicious banh mis, a first for our family.
A Late Flight to Da Nang
Our journey continued with a late-night flight from Hanoi to Da Nang. Upon arrival, we checked into the Min Toan Safi Ocean, a modern hotel by the seaside. Known for its comfortable accommodations and prime location, the hotel offered easy access to Da Nang’s vibrant coastal scene.
A Stroll Along Da Nang’s Coastline
After a quick dinner, we explored the nearby oceanfront, taking in the sights and sounds of Da Nang by night. The strip was lined with tanks showcasing live seafood, including fish and lobsters, destined for the day’s culinary delights. Da Nang’s beachside area is renowned for its upscale vibe, with trendy restaurants and luxury hotels catering to both locals and tourists.
The gentle sound of waves and the cool sea breeze provided a calming end to a long day. While prices along the coastal strip can be steep, the experience of dining and relaxing by the ocean is well worth it.
Looking Ahead to Ba Na Hills
With plans to visit the Ba Na Hills the following day, we retired for the night. Though the weather forecast was less than promising, the anticipation of exploring Da Nang’s famous hill station and its Golden Bridge kept our spirits high. Day five had been a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and culinary indulgence, leaving us eager for more of Vietnam’s coastal charm.
