30/12/2024 – Day 7: A Day of Serenity and Lanterns in Hoi An
A Leisurely Morning by the Beach
Day seven offered a rare chance to sleep in, as our trip to Hoi An was planned for the late afternoon. Taking full advantage of the relaxed start, I began the morning with a stroll along the beach. The cool water and soft sand provided a refreshing start to the day. I also flew my drone across the shoreline, capturing sweeping views of the serene coastline.
With some time on hand, I decided to revisit the Standing Buddha Statue at Linh Ung Pagoda, traveling by Grab bike. Flying the drone from a respectful distance, I managed to capture the statue and its surrounding landscape. However, my session was cut short when a gentleman on a scooter kindly requested I refrain from flying near the monastery grounds. Respecting his request, I packed up and returned to the hotel.
Exploring the Marble Mountains
Our journey to Hoi An began with a stop at the Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble hills named after the five elements: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. These mountains are steeped in spiritual and historical significance, serving as a pilgrimage site for centuries.
Marble Sculptures and Craftsmanship
Before exploring the mountains themselves, we visited a factory where artisans demonstrated the intricate process of creating marble sculptures. From delicate figurines to massive statues, the craftsmanship was awe-inspiring. While the prices were steep, witnessing the artistry up close was an experience in itself.
The Caves and Temples
The Marble Mountains are home to a network of caves and Buddhist sanctuaries. Walking through the caves, we marveled at the natural formations and the serene Buddha statues nestled within. Notable sites included:
- Huyen Khong Cave, illuminated by natural light streaming through a large opening, creating a tranquil and ethereal atmosphere.
- Tang Chon Cave, smaller but equally captivating with its intricate carvings and peaceful ambiance.
- Tam Thai Pagoda, a historic pagoda perched atop the mountains, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The spiritual energy of the place was palpable, and we even spotted Vietnamese women in traditional ao dai outfits posing for photos, adding a touch of grace to the already picturesque setting.
Silk and Needlework in Hoi An
Continuing our journey, we arrived in Hoi An and made our first stop at a silk and needlework factory, where artisans demonstrated the intricate process of silk production, from the caterpillar stage to weaving. We also saw stunning needlework pieces, similar to those in Hanoi. One exquisite piece priced at $1,400 USD tempted me, but I ultimately decided against the purchase—a decision I now regret.
Hoi An is also famous for its skilled tailors who create custom-made suits for men and women. Watching them work was fascinating, though our limited time meant we couldn’t place any orders.
Exploring the Old Quarter
As we arrived in Hoi An Old Town, the evening began to settle in with a light drizzle adding to the charm. However, the sheer number of tourists bustling through the streets somewhat muted the quaint beauty of the town. Walking through the Old Quarter, we admired the Japanese Bridge, an iconic and picturesque landmark, and the vibrant lanterns adorning every corner.
Dinner and Lantern Boats
We enjoyed an early dinner before venturing out for a boat trip on the river. The high water levels prevented our boat from passing under the bridge, but the experience was still magical. Hoi An’s famous night market came alive with its kaleidoscope of Vietnamese lanterns, each boat lit beautifully, creating an enchanting scene.
We also participated in the tradition of floating small handmade lanterns on the river. This practice, meant to honor ancestors, added a reflective and serene touch to the lively atmosphere. Though undeniably touristy, the activity had a certain charm that captured the spirit of Hoi An.
Reflections on Hoi An
As we walked through the bustling streets, I couldn’t help but imagine how tranquil and magical Hoi An would be during the off-season or late at night after the tourists had dispersed. Staying overnight might have allowed us to experience the town’s quieter, more intimate side.
Day seven offered a mix of serenity and vibrancy, with the beach in the morning and the lantern-lit charm of Hoi An in the evening. The city’s beauty, even amidst the crowds, left a lasting impression, making it a highlight of our journey through Vietnam.
