31/12/2024 – Day 8: Exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels and Welcoming 2025
Morning Journey to Ho Chi Minh City
Our New Year’s Eve began with a morning flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. The flight, though slightly delayed, was aimed at getting us to Ho Chi Minh by midday to join an excursion to the legendary Cu Chi Tunnels. The tension rose as delays in luggage retrieval and the infamous Ho Chi Minh traffic—exacerbated by New Year’s Eve shopping—threatened to derail our plans. The inner-city traffic lights, seemingly every 100 yards, added to the chaos.
Thankfully, we managed to join the excursion just in time, dropping our bags at the Adora Art Hotel before setting out on this unforgettable journey.
The Cu Chi Tunnels: A Masterpiece of Guerrilla Warfare
The Cu Chi Tunnels offer a sobering and eye-opening glimpse into the ingenuity and resilience of the Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War. Once part of a sprawling underground network stretching over 250 kilometers, these tunnels served as the backbone of the North Vietnamese guerrilla campaign against American and South Vietnamese forces.
History of the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War, or the American War as it is known in Vietnam, began as a conflict rooted in the division of Vietnam into communist North and capitalist South after the First Indochina War. The North Vietnamese, supported by the Soviet Union and China, fought against the South Vietnamese government, which was backed by the United States. The war was marked by a relentless guerrilla campaign by the North, leveraging the intricate network of the Cu Chi Tunnels.
Exploring the Tunnels
Walking through the site, we learned how the tunnels operated on three levels, allowing for strategic maneuvering. They housed kitchens, hospitals, schools, and living quarters, all hidden beneath the surface. The ingenuity of the tunnel system was astonishing:
- Subterfuge Tactics: Sandals made to leave footprints pointing in the opposite direction to confuse enemies.
- Traps: Ingeniously crafted booby traps that left enemy soldiers vulnerable.
- Adaptation: Kitchens with vents designed to disperse smoke away from enemy detection.
- Resilience: Even schools were operated underground to ensure normalcy during wartime.
Experiencing the Tunnels
Crawling through a section of the tunnels on all fours was a goosebump-inducing moment, imagining the lives of those who used them daily. The tunnels’ narrow confines showcased how smaller Vietnamese soldiers could navigate them, whereas larger American soldiers often struggled, requiring assistance from allies like the Filipinos and Koreans.
The displays of tanks, artillery, and landmines emphasized the brutal reality of the war. Visitors could also try shooting firearms like the AK-47, a stark reminder of the tools of war. The visit was both harrowing and humbling, a testament to the determination and ingenuity of the Vietnamese people.
Returning to the City and New Year’s Eve Festivities
After the excursion, we returned to Ho Chi Minh City, braving the dense traffic once more. Frustrated by the congestion, we decided to walk the last 15 minutes to our hotel, a decision that proved quicker and more enjoyable.
Fireworks Over the Saigon River
After a brief rest, we ventured into the city’s vibrant streets for the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Crowds thronged the Ben Thanh Market and the waterfront, where the main fireworks display was held. Despite arriving late, we managed to secure a prime spot to witness the spectacular fireworks lighting up the Saigon River. The dazzling display marked the end of 2024 and ushered in 2025 with hope and joy.
Reflections on the Day
The visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels was a profound reminder of Vietnam’s resilience and ingenuity during one of history’s most challenging conflicts. The evening’s celebrations, filled with music, lights, and a festive atmosphere, provided the perfect contrast, symbolizing hope and renewal for the new year. As the clock struck midnight, we welcomed 2025 with a sense of gratitude and anticipation for the adventures ahead.
