01/01/2025 – Day 9: A Journey Through the Mekong Delta
Morning Departure and Reflections
On the first day of 2025, my son stayed back in Ho Chi Minh City to meet a school friend who was coincidentally on holiday there as well. Meanwhile, my wife, daughter, and I set out on a trip to the Mekong Delta. In hindsight, I wondered if staying back in Saigon to explore its museums might have been a better use of time. However, the Mekong Delta excursion offered an insight into the lives of the people who call this region home.
The Mekong Delta: Vietnam’s Rice Bowl
The Mekong Delta, often referred to as the “Rice Bowl of Vietnam,” spans a vast network of rivers, swamps, and islands. This fertile region is a lifeline for millions of people, contributing significantly to Vietnam’s agricultural output. Known for its floating markets, lush orchards, and unique biodiversity, the delta is an iconic part of the country’s cultural and ecological fabric.
Honey Farms and Python Encounters
After a comfortable journey in a luxury bus arranged by our travel agent, we boarded a large boat that took us to a honey farm. Here, we learned about beekeeping practices and the benefits of beeswax for skincare. My wife purchased some beeswax, and we even posed for photographs with a python draped around our necks. Holding the wriggling snake was both thrilling and unsettling, adding a unique touch to the day’s experiences.
Vietnamese Music and Local Cuisine
Next, we rode a golf buggy to a restaurant where we sampled an array of Vietnamese fruits. The ambiance was enhanced by live performances of traditional Vietnamese music. Musicians rotated through the venue, offering a delightful medley of melodies that brought the region’s culture to life.
Afterward, we took a small bamboo boat to another location where we enjoyed Vietnamese cuisine. The area featured a crocodile farm, where we observed crocodiles being fed, and a fish farm showcasing local aquaculture practices.
Coconut Candy and Snake Wine
A highlight of the trip was visiting a workshop that specialized in making coconut candy. Watching the process—from cracking coconuts to crafting the final product—was fascinating. The candies, made without sugar, were a testament to traditional techniques. Additionally, the workshop displayed unusual items like snake wine, adding an eccentric twist to the visit.
Bamboo Fibre Products: A Sustainable Touch
On the return journey, we stopped at an outlet showcasing bamboo fibre products. Bamboo, a sustainable resource, is transformed into breathable, fire-resistant fabrics with excellent water absorption properties. The sales pitch was compelling, and we left with scarves made from bamboo fibre. From undergarments to towels, the range of products was impressive, blending eco-friendliness with practicality.
Evening Respite in Ho Chi Minh City
Back at the hotel, we rested briefly before heading out for dinner at a nearby restaurant. The meal involved assembling Vietnamese rice paper rolls, which we filled with various ingredients before enjoying. I opted for a fish filling, while my daughter chose pork. The hands-on nature of the meal added an interactive element to the dining experience.
To end the day, we indulged in another Vietnamese massage. Unlike the one I had in Hanoi, this massage focused on pressure points, with firm pressure applied to release tension. Though intense, it was deeply relaxing.
Reflections on the Mekong Delta Trip
While the Mekong Delta trip provided cultural insights and unique experiences, I felt it might have been an excursion to skip. Ho Chi Minh City itself offers a wealth of attractions, such as the War Remnants Museum, which we unfortunately didn’t have time to visit. We debated squeezing it in the next morning before our flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, but the decision was yet to be made. Regardless, the day offered a blend of cultural exploration and relaxation, marking a reflective start to the new year.
